Tortuguero Rainforest Jungle
Tortuguero Costa Rica
Costa Rica Travel Tortuguero

Tortuguero is unlike other places that I have visited. Here in the sea level, beach destination, with a lush tropical rainforest that is known for turtles is a natural sightseeing destination for all who chose to visit. This combination made it special, unique, and memorable. On a Tortuguero Costa Rica river tour on the jungle canal sightseeing tour, sit back as the Costa Rica wildlife can be seen from your boat. White faced and howler monkey, toucans, and the leave cutting ants are just some of the Costa Rica wildlife you can see. Perhaps you want to slowly kayak through this natural waterway rainforest of Tortuguero.  Turtle watching is a seasonal sightseeing touring option.

Tortuguero National Park’s Tours

If you want to see the nesting season for the Turtles, then July to October is the best; and August through September is the busiest tourist turtle viewing months. A night tour of the beach is between 2-4 hours in length that is accompanied by a licensed guide.

Because Tortuguero National Park has a lot of canals, creeks, and swamps, it is more popular and easier to see by boat where you have a chance to see the bird and wildlife of Tortuguero National Park.

Atlantic Green Turtles; have been coming to the Caribbean beaches of Tortuguero for centuries to lay their eggs. Much has been researched and written about them. When the baby turtles grow to adulthood they return to the same beach where they were hatched. You have the opportunity to witness these events. During the prime season from June through early October there are nightly turtle watching tours right on the beach.

Canal Nature Float – Tortuguero

The canal waters flow slowly, which cause a mirror image reflection of the lush foliage. The effect is quite dramatic every time one rides along the canals. Canal Tours are slow paced, leaving lots of opportunity for asking questions, spotting wildlife, and pondering the magic that surrounds you. The sights and sounds vary from day to day, along with the time of the day.

Wildlife is active early in the morning, while a sunny afternoon is perfect to find fresh water turtles, caimans, and lizards sunning on logs along the banks of the canals. The professional or novice birdwatcher will be kept very busy as the species are abundant. Our guides explain the layout of the trails, the way the jungle environment works together, they help you spot wildlife, and give you smart safety tips for when you roam the trails without them. The jungle is a tangle of varieties of life. Return to it time and again, and take lots of time to explore, each visit is unique and memorable.

Rainforest Jungle Hike – Tortuguero

It is always advised to take a guided tour in the jungle before you meander there alone.

On my trip we saw jungle ants with their tracks through the rainforest bed, and a group of monkeys came within 15-20 feet of us. This really does depend on the day, but this experience is still with me.

Jungle Kayak - Tortuguero

Everything that you would expect of a tropical destination with lush surrounding is served up on a golden platter on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. Whether it is a kayak, by boat, or hiking through forest trails, Tortuguero National Park is a perfect example of tropical rain forest. The park is made up of more than 18 000 hectares and protects a wealth of exotic wildlife including those that gave it its name - turtles.

There are a variety of ways you can make your way through this water-park that is made up of several canals that twist and turn. Accompanied by a guide, you should be able to enjoy the park to the fullest since they can take you deeper into the park than if you were making it on your own. Here you can take a silent kayak into the park. The kayak will afford you excellent views of the surrounding vegetation and wildlife but will also prove to be a physically demanding tour and prepare yourself.

This picture is what Tortuguero is. A National park that is a lowland rivers where motor boats replace vehicles, and were we still saw Toucans, Crocodiles, Monkeys to name a few.

Tortuguero National Park is north east of San Jose and covers an area of 46 900 acres of Beach and true Rainforest. Tortuguero is derived from the Spanish word meaning giant sea turtles. It is here that the Green, Giant Leatherback, Hawksbill and Loggerhead turtles nest from July to October on the twenty-two miles of Tortuguero National Parks’ beaches.

The climate is warm and humid that has an average temperature of 71 degrees Fahrenheit and an average rainfall of 200 inches per year and recommended that you have rain gear. The warm day is followed by cool nights in the Tortuguero National Park.

Tortuguero is a very lowland Beach/Rainforest region with the majority of land being from sea level to 60 feet in height; with a vast extension inland. Therefore there is an intricate network of canals, creeks and swamps together with a mixture of Rainforest. With such a vastness of lowland the landscape is direct contrast to the Cloud Rainforests of Arenal and Monteverde National Parks.  Here you will find coastal scrub to the wide area of Raphia Palm swamp mixed in with waterway margins to tall multi layered evergreen rainforest with trees over 180 feet tall. These trees in Tortuguero National Park are some of the tallest in Costa Rica.

Tortuguero National Park is home to over 300 species of amphibians, and 111 species of reptiles that include marine turtles. There are 60 mammal species including jaguars, cougars, river otters and manatees. There are also fishing bats, three toe sloths, iguanas, basilisk lizards, poison dart frogs and howler white faced monkeys. Birds that are often sighted are toucans, swallow-tailed hawks, heron kingfishers, parrots and jacanas.
